Scope and Contents Showing Kassagama of Toro riding on the elephant Futki: 'Futki travelled by easy stages from Hoima to Fort Portal, and her march continued to be a triumphal progress. Kassagama, although there was no howdah, begged to be allowed to have a ride on the animal and very pluckily settled himself on a mattress which had been tied on the animal's back. With his great umbrella of state held over him by the mahout, he made an impressive figure and I took a good photograph of him in that position.'...

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Makerere was opened by the Government as a technical school in 1922, and two years later a class for training medical assistants was added. In 1926 responsibility for technical training transferred from Makerere to the Kampala Training College and Makerere became a general training college. A commission of inquiry into education in East Africa recommended in 1937 that steps should be taken to transform Makerere into a college of higher education and in 1950 Makerere became a university...
