212 x 152 mm. A view showing a group of Masai women carrying loads of sticks and water, posed in front of an encampment of tents. Date and location unknown. One of the tents in the background is stamped U.R. 1898, so the encampment is probably connected with Uganda Railway work, and the photograph taken in, or after, 1898. Y30468B/45 and 47 are also by the same photographer (William D. Young) and show similar scenes.

Scope and Contents Makerere was opened by the Government as a technical school in 1922, and two years later a class for training medical assistants was added. In 1926 responsibility for technical training transferred from Makerere to the Kampala Training College and Makerere became a general training college. A commission of inquiry into education in East Africa recommended in 1937 that steps should be taken to transform Makerere into a college of higher education and in 1950 Makerere became a university...

The prints mostly relate to Westgate’s earlier work, but there are a few from the 1930s, including nos. 426-454 of visits to South Africa and African islands, all processed in February 1936. The captions have been used as titles and may contain offensive, inappropriate or outdated terms. They have been retained to reflect the context of their creation.
