156 x 202 mm. Mr. Duncan Sandys, Secretary of State of State for the Colonies, formally opened the Kenya Independence Conference at Lancaster House, London.
This picture shows him addressing the conference. On the left is the Kenya Government delegation led by Mr. Jomo Kenyatta. On the right are the delegates representing the Opposition parties and the European community. To the left of Mr. Sandys is the Governor of Kenya, Mr. Malcolm Macdonald.

A series of letters from Lanning to his mother and uncle outlining his work as an assistant at the Lavingtons’ estate near Kitale, including accounts of the cultivation of coffee, maize, and other crops. A series of letters from Lanning to his mother and uncle describing his move to a new job at Kitale Stores in Kakamega. Lanning discusses work at the store and its customers among the European community. He reports upon his friends and social life, travels within the region, and reaction to the Italian invasion of Abyssinia [Ethiopia]. Circa 100 sheets.

Most of the letters are from Lanning to his mother and uncle reporting upon his new employment in gold mining in Kakamega. Subjects include mining techniques, production, pricing, and his work as a surveyor and prospector. The file contains Lanning’s contract with his employer, Gold and Base Metal Mines of Nigeria Limited, and a catalogue of prospector’s drills. The letters also describe his social life, friends, recreation and travel (circa 100 sheets).

Soon after its foundation in 1868, the Royal Colonial Institute had envisaged the establishment of a museum, but following the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition in South Kensington, and the creation of the Imperial Institute, the plan was abandoned. Over the years, however, the society built up a small, eclectic collection of objects as members donated items they had received as gifts or purchased during work or travel overseas.
