Udi Village. Mass Literacy class, 1940 - 1949
Showing a row of women at a table in the open air receiving instruction. A typewritten caption (which duplicates most of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'This is the 'top' class for women - normally 12. These are wives of miners at Enugu and of N.A. [Native Administration] employees'. The annotation continues 'Note these women are well dressed'.
Uganda and Northern Nigeria 1908-12, 1908-11 - 1912-03
A scrapbook album containing prints by various photographers, including Alfred Lobo. The prints are of various sizes and the majority are captioned in Bell's hand. Captions composed for this catalogue are enclosed in square brackets. Among the scenes and events depicted in the album are the Kampala Exhibition of 1908, views of Government House, Entebbe, the visit of Winston Churchill to Uganda in 1907, sleeping sickness sufferers in Uganda and durbars in Northern Nigeria.

Collection of black and white press agency and official photographs (including 5 duplicates) relating to developments during 1965-80, from the time of Rhodesia's unilateral declaration of Independence (UDI) until the emergence of the republic of Zimbabwe. Many were collected to illustrate articles in 'Commonwealth in Focus', and some were reproduced in the 'Commonwealth in Focus' exhibition 1982. The captions have been used as titles and have been recorded as found.
Umana village. Co-operative Shop, 1940 - 1949
A single storey stone building with corrugated-iron roof. The printed caption on the reverse reads 'Note - shop boy's quarters at back'. A pencilled annotation on the reverse reads 'Umana Village. Co-op shop. This was originally a copy of Ojwoka shop (see 8) but was built 4 feet longer than the Ojwoka one. Then Obwofia built theirs (see 17) with shop-boys quarters attached. So as an afterthought Umana added shop boy's quarters at back - easily distinguishable in photograph'.
