Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The collection consists of a negatives album, produced by Lennon Ltd., Cape Town, containing 125 x 95 mm negatives and an envelope with six further negatives of the same size. Some are poor photographs but many that are apparently very faint contain a good deal of detail. Seven modern prints have also been made and are listed as Y305U/105-111. The images were taken by Albert Ernest Lamb and the captions are from the list in the front of the album. The captions have been used as titles...

Armstrong is listed as Planter at Glenmore, Umzinto in the Natal Almanac for 1879 and 1881; by 1885 he was a road inspector at Greytown (N.A. 1886) and was in that employment at Umzinto from 1886 to 1887 or 1888 (N.A. 1887, 1888). Archives relating to a mission to South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, New Zealand and Canada undertaken by Sir Henry Rider Haggard on behalf of the RCI to investigate possibilities of post WWI settlement of ex-servicemen. Haggard's report was published as 'The After-War Settlement & Employment of Ex-Service Men in the Overseas Dominions' in 1916.

Rear Admiral Hon. Sir Fred W. Grey, 1859

Scope and Contents A half length studio portrait of Grey sitting in naval uniform. Grey (1805-1878) entered the Navy in 1819 and served on The South American Station 1821-1822 and in the Mediterranean 1823-1825. After further postings he served as Admiral Superintendent of the Bosporus and as a Lord of the Admiralty 1861-1866. He wrote 'On the Organisation of the Navy' (1860) and retired in 1870.
