Rear Admiral Hon. Sir Fred W. Grey, 1859
Scope and Contents
A half length studio portrait of Grey sitting in naval uniform. Grey (1805-1878) entered the Navy in 1819 and served on The South American Station 1821-1822 and in the Mediterranean 1823-1825. After further postings he served as Admiral Superintendent of the Bosporus and as a Lord of the Admiralty 1861-1866. He wrote 'On the Organisation of the Navy' (1860) and retired in 1870. This photograph dates from his period as Commander of the Cape and African Stations to which he was appointed in 1857. Photograph probably by Frederick York.
