Mouth of the Baaken’s River, 1865 - 1878

Scope and Contents

190 x 133 mm. Showing the mouth of the Baaken’s River spanned by the old wood and iron Union Bridge. On the hillside behind stands Fort Frederick, built in 1799, with the Military Hospital, formerly the Barracks, slightly below and to the right of the fort. An almost identical photograph is used in Redgrave, p 88. It is there dated 1860 but this does not appear to tally with the statement (p 90) that the bridge was destroyed in a storm in 1857.

161 x 116 mm. Showing the man-made lagoon at Port Alfred with the Indian Ocean in the distance. During the nineteenth century many attempts were made to increase the size and depth of the harbourmouth at Port Alfred (known until 1860 as Port Francis) but extensive silting of the harbourmouth proved too costly and the port was abandoned early in the present century.

Born in Cape Town, Watermeyer studied law at Leiden University from 1841-1843 and in London from 1843 until he was called to the Bar in 1847. He returned to practice in the Cape the same year. In 1854-1855 he represented the Worcester District in the Legislative Assembly and was appointed to the bench in 1857, serving on it until 1857 when he went to London on sick leave...
