Mouth of the Baaken’s River, 1865 - 1878
190 x 133 mm. Showing the mouth of the Baaken’s River spanned by the old wood and iron Union Bridge. On the hillside behind stands Fort Frederick, built in 1799, with the Military Hospital, formerly the Barracks, slightly below and to the right of the fort. An almost identical photograph is used in Redgrave, p 88. It is there dated 1860 but this does not appear to tally with the statement (p 90) that the bridge was destroyed in a storm in 1857.
Mouth of the Kowie River with the Lagoon in the foreground, 1900 - 1910
161 x 116 mm. Showing the man-made lagoon at Port Alfred with the Indian Ocean in the distance. During the nineteenth century many attempts were made to increase the size and depth of the harbourmouth at Port Alfred (known until 1860 as Port Francis) but extensive silting of the harbourmouth proved too costly and the port was abandoned early in the present century.
