[Mr. Hay's Ostrich farm, Cold Bokkeveld, 1867], 1867-01

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3059A/76

Scope and Contents

140 x 70 mm. Showing a group of ostriches grazing in a field. A note on the reverse in C.W. Busk's hand states: 'This is the first regular ostrich farm. The full grown black one was very savage and ran at anybody except Mr. Hay's daughter, but being blind in one eye, I and our Malay driver were sent to the far side of the enclosure, outside the fence, to attract his attention while my father got as close as he dared on his blind side with the light camera, it not being safe to take the larger one, as he might have to beat a hurried retreat. I remember the incident well, I was then 14½ years old'.
