A note on the reverse of the print, in Mrs. de Kock's hand reads in part: ‘Chief Malaboch (over 86? [in fact, about 92 in 1936]) Blauwerg Mts near Zoutpansberg/Louis Trichardt. Transvaal ... Still flew the Union Jack in 1936 on the Kopje on which he has his Kraal. Withstood a long siege against the Dutch. His taunting...

269 x 240 mm. A group portrait of the large band of musicians and dancers, with the huts of Tetelaka's kraal in the background. The location of the kraal has not been identified, nor has any information about Tetelaka himself been found. The print itself has the caption: 'Chief Tetelaka's band, Natal', and is numbered '157.'

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The collection consists of a negatives album, produced by Lennon Ltd., Cape Town, containing 125 x 95 mm negatives and an envelope with six further negatives of the same size. Some are poor photographs but many that are apparently very faint contain a good deal of detail. Seven modern prints have also been made and are listed as Y305U/105-111. The images were taken by Albert Ernest Lamb and the captions are from the list in the front of the album. The captions have been used as titles...

Circumcision dance, Amanguba Tribe, Natal [i.e. KwaZulu-Natal], 1880 - 1889

201 x 161 mm. Showing young men of this Bantu tribe smeared all over with white clay and dressed in grass skirts and grass headdresses which conceal their faces. During this period they are known as Abakweta or 'white boys', the ceremonies connected with the circumcision rites lasting several weeks.

A seated half length portrait of Sir Cristoffel Joseph Brand (1797-1875) dressed in judges robes and wig. Born in Simonstown, Brand was admitted to the Cape Bar in 1821. Brand served as the first Speaker in the Cape Parliament from 1854-1874 and was a noted advocate and journalist.

Contains slides including a group of seven interiors of Marnham's house taken in August 1968, three showing servants in February 1968 and one of the visit of the Mayor for the celebration of the Queen's birthday on 20 April 1968. The majority show the garden, from scenes in April 1967 to seven transparencies making up a panorama taken on the eve of departure in March 1970. In between these are extensive views both of individual clumps of flowers and more general scenes.
