Van der Ven is listed as living at Sea Point in The Cape of Good Hope Directory and Almanac for 1868. By 1879 he is listed as a wine merchant residing at Arnheim House, Buitencingel. In the 1880 edition, he is listed as being in Europe and does not appear in the 1882 edition.
