The two men, the one on the left wearing the 'isicoco' or circular headring denoting a married man, the younger one wearing feathered plumes, are members of a 'black' or relatively inexperienced regiment: this is denoted by their shields which are black with a white latticework supporting structure. As the regiment increased in war service so the shields became progressively whiter, until...
