[Photographs of the peoples of southern Africa]

 Fonds
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y305O

Scope and Contents

An album containing mounted prints, the majority sepia toned, with typescript captions and explanatory notes depicting the peoples of southern Africa. The captions and notes have been recorded as found and may include language which is offensive, inaccurate or inappropriate. They have been retained to reflect the context of the collection's creation. Captions supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets. The prints are of various sizes but the majority measure approximately 200 x 150 mm. They were taken by Mrs Malcolm Barker [Dorothy Barker], [Lucy] Mignon Herring, Dr. Killie Campbell, Barbara Tyrrell, Dr [Vincent Aethalstan] Wager, [Lincesal] Lyn Acutt and C[laude] Whysall. The peoples represented are: Ndebele, Zulu, Tonga, Swazi, Shagaan, Bushmen, Basuto, Pondo, Xhosa, Fingo and Tembu. The term Bushmen was used to describe a group of Khoisan-speaking hunter-gatherers who lived in the Kalahari Desert. The album also contains two short articles (probably part of a longer series) on African costume by Barbara Tyrrell, extracted from the 'Veld Trust News' (February and March 1948).
