The shop is a single storey building, with attached Corinthian columns and a covered porch running from the entrance to the street. The firm was established in Calcutta in 1811 and in the later years of the century was also a photographic supplier, (Massey p.60).

The store is a two storey brick building and was, according to Massey, the first shop to be built in this area, completed about 1911. It was erected on the site of the godown of a French liquor agent named Dollet. The firm of Hall and Anderson was founded in 1891, (Massey p.109).

The graceful single storey building has a raised verandah with an entablature resting on eight Corinthian columns. The iron railings of the verandah have lifebuoys hanging from them announcing the firm's position as 'marine opticians', with the firm's trademark in the centre (an unidentified bird, presumably an eagle, grasping a large pair of spectacles)....

The sign on the frieze above the verandah states that the firm was established in 1821, but no further information has been discovered. The pavement in front of the building has been renovated and a coat of arms signifying the Viceroy's patronage is fixed above the main entrance, (Massey p.41). Probably by Johnston and Hoffman.

Employees are posed in front of the building. This firm of mechanical engineers, ironmongers and motor car and cycle agents was established in 1820 on the site later occupied by the Great Eastern Hotel (see Y3022AA/44-47). It moved to the site at 9 Esplanade Row East in 1853 and these refurbished buildings were completed in 1905....
