205 x 149 mm. A view in the gardens, with city buildings on the skyline. The ‘improvement in the Yarra’ refers, presumably, to the deepening and straightening of the course of the river in 1888 which gave an extension to the garden area.

The gardens are situated at the east of the central part of the city behind the Parliament and Treasury buildings. The gardens were the creation of James Sinclair, a fine botanical artist, who also in 1850 designed Czar Nicholas gardens at St Petersburg. The Fitzroy Gardens he created out of swampy marshland.
