Scope and Contents 99 x 134 mm. A head and shoulders studio portrait of a heavily tattooed Maori, with feathers in his hair. The photographer of this picture has retouched the negative, clarifying the man’s tattoo marks (a fairly common practice when the lines did not show up well). This plate gives a very clear picture of Moko designs: the pu-kauwae or spiral designs on the chin, the rerepehi, a series of parallel curved lines from the cheek to the side of the nose, the rerepi and pongiangia, spirals on the...

95 x 136 mm. A head and shoulders studio portrait of a tattooed Maori warrior, with feathers in his hair and a woven blanket draped around him. As in Y3089D/60, the tattooing has been retouched to give it greater clarity. This man’s moko is more elaborate than that of Y3089D/60. As well as the features mentioned there, he had additional spirals on his chin, called paepae, and the curved tiwhana on his forehead turn down towards his eyes and then back towards his ears.

Scope and Contents 150 x 105 mm. Archibald Meston (1851 - 1924) posing with an Aboriginal Australian spear. The spear is inserted into a small cup at the end of the stick, and flicked out, enabling the spear to be thrown over 100 yards. Meston was a journalist and explorer who became interested in the language and culture of the Aboriginal Australian peoples, and being a keen sportsman, was a practiced thrower of the boomerang and spear.
