[A Maori warrior], 1884 - 1885
Scope and Contents
99 x 134 mm. A head and shoulders studio portrait of a heavily tattooed Maori, with feathers in his hair. The photographer of this picture has retouched the negative, clarifying the man’s tattoo marks (a fairly common practice when the lines did not show up well). This plate gives a very clear picture of Moko designs: the pu-kauwae or spiral designs on the chin, the rerepehi, a series of parallel curved lines from the cheek to the side of the nose, the rerepi and pongiangia, spirals on the nose, and the tiwhana, a series of rays curving over the forehead from the inner edge of the eyebrows.
