[A Maori warrior], 1884 - 1885
Scope and Contents
95 x 136 mm. A head and shoulders studio portrait of a tattooed Maori warrior, with feathers in his hair and a woven blanket draped around him. As in Y3089D/60, the tattooing has been retouched to give it greater clarity. This man’s moko is more elaborate than that of Y3089D/60. As well as the features mentioned there, he had additional spirals on his chin, called paepae, and the curved tiwhana on his forehead turn down towards his eyes and then back towards his ears.
