285 x 230 mm. A view of Papua New Guineans standing and sitting on the deck. The European standing extreme left is possibly H.H. Romilly. One sitting Papua New Guinean wears a long comb through his hair (whose position and angle was said to indicate the wearer's disposition), and another man has a claypipe through his septum.

Parliament House and Treasury, 1885 - 1901

199 x 145 mm. A view of the Parliament House building from Spring Street. The treasury building can be seen in the distance. The Parliament buildings face down Bourke Street and have an ornate frontage with steps leading up to Doric columns and facings of Mount Difficult stone. Building was started in 1856 and largely completed by the middle of the 1880s.

225 x 180 mm. A similar photograph to C3085C/4, although a slightly different angle. In the time lapse between the two pictures, the road has been surfaced, there are telegraph poles, and the street is lit by gas. A horse no longer browses in front of the main entrance to the building. The extensions to the building have not yet, however, been started.

Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand, 1876

A view looking across to Parnell Hill, an Auckland suburb situated to the west of Hobson Bay. Land allotments in the area were first sold in 1841, but in this picture it still remains a fairly peaceful appearance, with villas and bungalows on the hill and a small industrial and commercial area at the foot. The railway cuts across the picture below the residential area with an iron bridge across the road.
