I had to leave the mail steamer as that only called at Pago-Pago and then went on to New Zealand. On landing we soon found a native who could talk a little English and he volunteered to show us the chief's house. Samoans are supposed to be the finest of the Polynesian races, they are big of stature, well made and of a prepossessing...

The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...
