Opepe, 1876
Scope and Contents
361 x 266 mm. The caption states: ‘Opepe is about 10 miles from Taupo, and is the headquarters of the constabulary for the District. It was here that the rebel Maoris surprised and massacred a small detachment of our men, 8th June, 1869.’ A view from above the road which runs through the settlement, showing wooden cabins beside the road with a fortified stockade on a piece of higher ground at the left. The massacre here referred to was the killing of 9 troopers by Te Kooti (Rikirangi Te Turuki, c 1830-1893), who for some time pursued a guerrilla campaign around the Lake Taupo area.
