270 x 208 mm. A view from the hill to the west of the Circular Quay looking east towards the Botanical Gardens and the south side of the docks, with merchants’ premises, shops, and sailing ships moored to the wharves. This photograph was taken before the building of the Customs House.

178 x 123 mm. An exterior view of the hotel, a narrow stone building with iron-work verandahs on the first floor. A horse carriage stands in front of the hotel which was built in 1872, at the height of the Bendigo building boom, and is situated at Charing Cross, just beyond Pall Mall.

A view of the wharves, with moored shipping and railway trucks loaded with coal running up to the ships' sides. The dyke is situated in the middle of Newcastle harbour at Carrington, and contains the main coal exporting wharves.

Facing p.18, referred to on p.15. William Pery, 5th Earl of Limerick (1840-1896) was born in Norfolk Island on 17 June 1840, where his father, later the 4th Earl, was a magistrate.
