Sugar plantation (small part of), 1880 - 1889

224 x 170 mm. A view from a hillside, looking down on the plantation headquarters located beside a river, with fields of cane beyond. Sugar was first planted on a commercial scale in the early 1870’s and soon after this the Colonial Sugar Refining Company of Sydney opened a large mill and refinery. The growth in output was therefore impressive: in 1875, 95 tons of sugar were exported, to the value of £650. By 1904 these figures had risen to 52,138 tons, earning £469,391.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Fonds: Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 200 x 45 mm in size, sold by John Sands of Sydney as indicated by stickers pasted onto the reverse. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...

Scope and Contents A view of the beach at Manly, with bathers in the surf in the background, and men and women posing for the camera in front. Laws forbidding public bathing during the hours of daylight had been in force since 1838, and were invoked against would-be surfers who had caught the craze from a certain Tony Tanna, who came from Tanna Island in the New Hebrides. By 1902, however, widespread disregard of this law stopped the police from taking any action and by 1907 Surf Clubs were founded at Manly...

268 x 201 mm. View looking towards the Governor Bourke Hotel which stands on the corner of Sussex Street, probably at its junction with Bathurst Street. The hotel abuts a ledge of rock which rises to a height of one storey. On top of this are modest two storey dwellings.
