 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3091A/17

Scope and Contents

224 x 170 mm. A view from a hillside, looking down on the plantation headquarters located beside a river, with fields of cane beyond. Sugar was first planted on a commercial scale in the early 1870’s and soon after this the Colonial Sugar Refining Company of Sydney opened a large mill and refinery. The growth in output was therefore impressive: in 1875, 95 tons of sugar were exported, to the value of £650. By 1904 these figures had risen to 52,138 tons, earning £469,391.
