Contains slides showing scenes in the house and gardens of John Ewart Marnham's residence just outside Castries. They include slides of the very attractive views from the garden and a series of aerial views taken at varying heights in May 1972. This section concludes with photographs of members of the domestic staff taken just before Marnham left St Lucia (dated Oct 72 nos 18-25). Slides have been renumbered but arrangement in the file remains as per the original typescript catalogue.

Drying the Golden Bean, Grenada, 1890 - 1893
281 x 216 mm. A view showing the cocoa drying racks on a Grenada estate. A group of women pose in front of the racks while workers can be seen spreading the beans uniformly. After the pods are picked the beans are 'sweated' in boxes for several days to remove the surrounding pulp. They are then placed on these racks for sun-drying before being packed and transported.

The mined rock is brought in small cars from the bottom of the shaft; the car is put on what is called a hoist and brought to the surface : then it is run out along rails and emptied as in these views. The rock... [lost by water stain] 'concentrates' the waste removed, and the finer 'silver'... reduced to a size that permits shipment.
