Scope and Contents
An album of photographs, with some loose insertions, including an annotated map of 'St. John's N.F, 1905', relating to Newfoundland 1902-1912. Most are 100 x 80 mm., but in many cases only part is visible owing to the size and shape of the frame through which they are seen.
The collection was studied by Professor Maurice and Mrs Shirley Scarlett in 1985; their information is embodied in the captions to nos. 3, 5-17, 30-51, 53, 55-56, 67, 69, 71, 74-75, 80, 82, 86, 90, 92-93, 95-101, 110-111.

Biographical / Historical
Collected by the Rev. James Bell, who was ordained deacon in 1902 and priest in 1903 by the Bishop of Newfoundland. Bell was Curate of Bay Roberts 1902-1904, Incumbent 1904-1906 and Rector 1906-1907. From 1907 to 1912, he was Curate of Newfoundland Cathedral, after which he returned to England. These photographs relate chiefly to Church life.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Many of the photographs are faded, dark or stained by chemicals. The worst of these are noted, but the general condition of the collection is not good.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The album was given by James Bell's son, the Rev. Edwin Bell, in October 1984.
