Scope and Contents

Half-plate (landscape format). Lunenburg (Canadian capital). Dryfish implies codfish. The fish screw is here seen pressing the dried cod into the cask. The fish from Lunenburg are chiefly exported to the West Indies, Porto Rico [sic], Cuba, Panama, Colon and Haiti. This company turns out annually about 70, 000 quintals (cwts) of dried codfish caught by schooners of 99 tons on the Grand Banks. The fish are brought here in salt. The Manager of this company expresses eagerness for immigrants of any genuine fisherman type - there is a scarcity of hands he says and he is confident of success for workers. A.H.F. What capital does - say a man with wife and two children require to come out here? The Manager: Well - practically none - if he arrives in February he can go right to work and if he has about $200 (£40) to buy a little furniture that would be all he requires. Our industry might easily be doubled whereas there are two schooners you can see from the window idle solely on account of scarcity of men. There must be at least 20 schooners idle today in Lunenburg County because the owners cannot get crews. (Fisher).
