Scope and Contents From the Fonds: This collection is mostly of albumen prints of photographs taken in Burma [Myanmar] in the later nineteenth century. Many are captioned and the captions have been used as titles and have been recorded as found. Titles supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets. Many photographs have been identified as the work of Felix Beato. All of these photographs belonged to Rodway Swinhoe (1863-1927), who may have bought them after the closure of Beato's emporium in Mandalay c.1906. On...

These three groups numbered by JEM do not include any scenes in Aden itself. They cover a journey into Abyan, with scenes in Zinjibar and Giar (Ja'ar); a visit to the Radfan, including a military post and Mukeiras; a visit to the Hadhramaut, with several views taken in Seiyn (Saiun). At the far end of the square can be seen the shop of Geok Teat and Co. who, Makepeace (ed, 1921, ii, p. 197) says: have been in business since 1868, according to one directory. But that of 1868 mentions Locke Hong Ghee and Co. (late Geok Teat and Co) as having been established in 1863. Tay Geok Teat ruled for many years, and died quite recently.
