Biographical / Historical

Frederic Thesiger Williams was born in Jaulnah on 8th August 1861. He was the son of Captain (later Colonel) Augustus Frederic Williams, 9th Madras Native Infantry, and his wife Jane, daughter of Revd. William Polwhele. Williams was commissioned into the British Army in 1881; became a Wing Officer, 26th Madras Native Infantry, in 1885; served in Burma in operations on the Western frontier 1885-87; made Captain in 1892; was the D.A.A.G. (Deputy Assistant Adjutant General) in the Chin Hills in 1896; was the DAQMG (Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General), 4th Infantry Brigade, China Expeditionary Force in 1900; made Major in 1901. Williams died on July 7th 1902 after being mauled by a wounded tiger. He was buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Madras.

Pritchard, 16th Madras Infantry, to Major C.S. Williams, 43rd Gurkha Rifles, dated 16 July 1902, describing the death of his brother, Frederic Thesiger Williams, after a hunting accident; a typescript containing biographical details of the Williams family.
