Memorial Church, 'All Souls', Cawnpore, 1880 - 1889

Scope and Contents

259 x 207 mm. General view of All Souls Memorial Church, Cawnpore, which was built to the north of Wheeler's Entrenchments. Begun in 1862, this church, built in Lombardic Gothic style of red brick and ashlar and dominated by a tall campanile, was designed by WaIter Granville (architect of the High Court and the Post Office in Calcutta). It was not consecrated until 1875 at a final cost of over £20,000.

207x261mm. Showing the memorial cross near the barracks in the Cawnpore cantonment. It bears the following inscription: 'In a well under this cross were laid, by ye hands of their fellows in suffering, ye bodies of men, women, and children, who died hard by during ye heroic defence of Wheeler's Entrenchment when beleaguered by the rebel Nana. - June 6th to 27th A.D. MDCCCLVII.' 250 members of the garrison were buried in this well.

Scope and Contents From the File: Contains prints, of an approximate size of 80 x 100 mm, mounted on card, six to a page, in a padded black leather album inscribed on the cover India 1905-06 from C.C. and 'Photographs taken by Sir Charles Cust Bt. 1905-06' is written on the fly leaf in Queen Marys hand. Sir Charles Cust took this collection of amateur photographs while accompanying the Royal Party. 271x213mm. View of the Memorial Garden in the north-east section of the city looking along the avenue towards the memorial. The gardens were laid out in memory of the prisoners, mainly women and children who were captured at the Sati Chaura Ghat and subsequently murdered at the Bibigarh as General Havelock's column marched to recapture Cawnpore.

Memorial to Captain Light, Penang, 1930 - 1939

Scope and Contents 62 x 88 mm. Showing the statue of Captain Francis Light (1740-1794), founder of Prince of Wales Island (Penang) in 1786. Light died of malaria on the island and was buried in the old Protestant Cemetery in Northam Road, George Town. The bronze statue designed by Frederick J. Wilcoxson, was originally sited in Fort Cornwallis and was unveiled in 1939. It was removed during the Japanese occupation and re-erected in 1946 in front of the High Court in Light Street. 236x186mrn. View of the statue and screen erected over the well where the victims of the Bibigarh massacre were buried. The enclosure is in the form of an octagonal screen in the Gothic style designed by Sir Henry Yule and inscribed over the entrance arch is 'These are they which came out of great tribulation'.

Scope and Contents 197 x 148 mm. Showing Tuanku Abdul Rahman and his consort Tunku Ampuan Kursiah seated on the decorated dais in the audience hall for the Menghadap. The triennal menghadap was inaugurated at Sri Menanti in 1901 and on these occasions the ruling chiefs paid homage to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar in front of members of the royal family and government officials.
