Government House Plantation, St Helena, 1900
202 x 151 mm. View looking across the lawn towards Government House, known as Plantation House. The building is ashlar faced with a hipped roof. The building rises two storeys and is seven bays wide, the only decorative touches being the projecting porch and the rusticated quoins. It was built in 1792 and remodelled in 1816. The Plantation is situated three miles inland from Jamestown.

226 x 101 mm. A view of the two wings of Government House, Port Louis, from the Place D'Armes. The groundfloor was first laid out by Mahe de Labourdonnais in 1738 and the present building dates from 1771. Facing the square is an undistinguished statue of Queen Victoria erected in 1902 and, largely obscured in the court yard behind, the statue of Sir William Stevenson (Governor of Mauritius 1857-63), erected in 1867.

Cocoa was successfully introduced from Kew in 1901, the first commercial planting taking place in 1908, and the first export in 1917. With the collapse of the market in 1924 however the industry was ruined and was not resuscitated untile the late 1950s.

The group is probably watching a march past of some kind, but this is out of print. The photograph may have been taken at the Kumasi Durbar of 12 December 1946, but this is not positively stated.

100 x 78 mm. Sir Charles King-Harman, Governor of Sierra Leone 1900-1904, in civilian clothes and with an umbrella on his arm, is about to raise his trilby hat. In the background are European officials in uniform, police bandsmen and spectators, and as the tower of the Cathedral visible in the distance locates the scene as Government Wharf, the occasion is presumably the greeting of a visiting dignitary.
