Scope and Contents 'A typical ‘sangoma’ or witch-doctor of Zulus in Natal or Zululand, wears her hair long and beaded, bladders on the head, goat-skin over shoulders and chest, and carries the small dancing shield and beaded switch of wildebeeste wail. The ‘sangoma’ is usually a married woman, wearing the black oxhide skirt. A male ‘sangoma’ also affects the dress of a married woman, plus all the other regalia as illustrated. Red clay on face and limbs augments the mysterious aspect. Strings of grey seed pods...

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The collection comprises black and white photographs, mostly 125 x 75 mm or 75 x 125 mm in size, film negatives and glass negatives. Some of the prints from glass plates are smaller, approximately 85 x 65 mm. The prints are good compositions, though some are rather dark, and were listed by Erica Ryan of the National Library of Australia, using, among other sources, the captioned envelopes in which the original negatives had been stored. The provenance of the collection is unclear,...

191 x 126 mm. Showing miners at work shifting boulders excavated from the trenches on Ferreira's mine. The Ferreira Gold Mining Company and the Ferreira Deep were named after Colonel Ignatius P. Ferreira (1840-1921) who had laid out Ferreira's Camp in 1886 and was one of the leaders of the early diggers. These two mines were among the most successful on the Wittwatersrand. Whitehead's Mine can just be made out on the horizon.
