65 x 45 mm. Oval. This uncaptioned picture shows a number of Africans gathered in a walled enclosure, with a bearded man, probably Archdeacon Balfour, addressing them. Though not specifically referred to in the diary, it is stuck in at the portion relating to Easter at 'Thaba 'Nchu' (March 29 1902).

58 x 102 mm. A view showing Dr Alfred Henry Spurrier (1862-1936) standing in front of the new lighthouse. The reverse of the photograph is annotated: 'Old Dr Spurrier the oldest white man in Z. One of the sports who turned out at 2pm to go to the ceremony'. Spurrier was for many years the Government Health Officer in Zanzibar and was also for a period the editor of the 'Zanzibar Gazette'.
