Showing Jumbo the captured elephant calf with his African keeper. The photographing of the animal is mentioned by Gedge in his diary: ‘Took a photo of Jumbo as the poor little beast may not be alive on our return; at present he is fairly well but seems rather weak’. The calf was captured when the three elephants seen in Y30468K/38 were shot on November 26th, but died a few months later of pneumonia (see F.J. Jackson, ‘Early Days in East Africa’, pp. 224-5).
