Scope and Contents The discovery of gold at Tarkwa during the 1890s provided the stimulus for the establishment of the Gold Coast Government Railway. Sekondi was chosen as the terminal port to support mining operations and construction began there in 1898, reaching Tarkwa in 1901. The line was extended to Kumasi in 1903. Frome's original sketches of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, numbers 187, 189-91 and 196 were sold to the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen’s University, in 1975. Photographs of these sketches are stored at RCMS 40/3/15-19. Glass plates which had been made from several of Frome’s drawings of the Rideau Canal (missing when the collection arrived in Cambridge) have been reproduced on Cambridge Digital Library as Y3062T.

'Wide a Wake Fair', Ascension, 1884-01-27 - 1884-01-31

Scope and Contents 200 x 146 mm. Showing huge numbers of nesting wideawakes (sooty terns) on Wideawake Plain, with a figure standing among them in the background. The breeding ground of these terns formed a valuable source of food for the naval garrison in the nineteenth century, who took thousands of eggs each year during ythe breeding season; these depredations do not appear to have posed any problems to the bird's survival however, and they were a considerable danger as they nested in their thousands...
