'Wide a Wake Fair', Ascension, 1884-01-27 - 1884-01-31
Scope and Contents
200 x 146 mm. Showing huge numbers of nesting wideawakes (sooty terns) on Wideawake Plain, with a figure standing among them in the background. The breeding ground of these terns formed a valuable source of food for the naval garrison in the nineteenth century, who took thousands of eggs each year during ythe breeding season; these depredations do not appear to have posed any problems to the bird's survival however, and they were a considerable danger as they nested in their thousands beside the runway built during the Second World War by American forces.
