Daily entries, beginning on 13 July when the ship left Plymouth travelling towards Madeira, in company with the Resolution. Bayly begins with an observation on latitudes taken at Drake's Island and Plymouth. His log entries contain many notes on sea conditions, while entries for 22-24 July include lunar observations from which he calculates longitude from Greenwich [RGO 14/56: 5r-5v]. On 21 July he observes that the ship passed Cape Portugal, approaching Madeira on 28 July.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The following letters were written by Professor and Mrs. Maitland to Dr. Josef Redlich of Vienna, author of 'Local government in England' (published in German 1901, in English 1903) and 'The procedure of the House of Commons' (published in German 1905, in English 1908). They mostly concern an essay by Maitland on English trusts and corporations for a Germanic readership, which Redlich offered to translate. They also contain references to Maitland's health, his thanks for German publications...
