Scope and Contents
'Abstract of a Jurnal from England towards Java Head and from Java Head to England in the ship "Duke of Gloucester" by Capt John Laudor - In the Hon'ble East India Company Service. In the years 1768 and 1769.'
This summarised account of a voyage of the East Indiaman 'Duke of Gloucester', travelling from England to Java Head, was compiled by Robert Bishop, based on the journal of Captain John Laudor. Entries are daily and run from 2 February until 29 June 1768, when the ship arrived at Java. Entries for the return voyage run from 13 January until 20 March 1769, when the ship anchored at St Helena, and from 31 March until 27 May 1769, when the ship reached England.
The entries are in tabular format and record the ship's latitude, longitude and magnetic variation, with occasional remarks (chiefly on the sighting of land or the ship’s arrival into port).
