Sheng means to be victorious, rong means scattered or confused, and zi is an appellation for a teacher or master. So this seal perhaps reflects Joseph Needham’s desire to bring order to scattered and confused textual references and ideas. (See also 9 below). This seal is held in a box. Xiao Muzhi seal 孝穆治印, Liu Yazi inscription 柳亞子題, 1983 yu Shanghai Zhushizhai 上海竹石齋 (at Shanghai Bamboo Stone Studio). In November 1983, Joseph Needham was awarded the People’s Republic of China Natural Science First Class award and received this seal in commemoration.
