Scope and Contents

Library style name seal. Another seal made from rock crystal. Shi su is an early (Song dynasty) transliteration of Joseph, and zhai is a study or library, so it means “a book belonging to Joseph’s library”. Carved by Xu Huanrong 徐煥榮, Liulichang Cuiwenge 琉璃廠翠文閣, a well-known artisan, sometime in the late summer of 1952, perhaps at the behest of Joseph Needham’s Chinese friends there. See the small sheet of paper with the stamp and other details in the 1952 travel files now catalogued in the archive as NRI2/5/15/3/6 and scanned as seal_1+13_receiptandstamp.pdf. Note that the receipt in the same file is not for this seal but for NRI2/8/6/2/13. This seal (NRI2/8/6/2/1) was probably bought by Chinese friends of Joseph Needham after they saw seal NRI2/8/6/2/13, which he bought. Seal NRI2/8/6/2/1 is much better quality.
