Whimsical seals. A pair of small metal seals bought in the summer of 1958. It means literally “riding out on horseback to view the flowers”, which originally meant doing something that made one very happy, though later came to mean paying only cursory attention to something. Almost certainly 1958, since there is a scrap of paper with test stamps of them and Joseph Needham’s translation “Riding out on horseback to view the flowers” found near the end of folder “Book Buying 中 1958”, and one of them is stamped on several of the old books bought in 1958 (though he also stamps some with an older seal and a newer seal).
