Treatise on Respiratory and other Diseases

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.6856

Scope and Contents

Latin treatise on respiratory and other diseases, fos 1-25. There is a list of contents on fo. ii which is partly torn away. At the foot of this is the name 'Arthur Holl[ingworth]', and on fo. 43 in the same hand is 'Arthur Hollingworth P.tuo', below which, in a different hand, is 'Rowland Freeman 1705'. It is not clear if Hollingworth is the author or the scribe. After the treatise, in the same hand, are 'Clavis verborum omnium in Chymia', Latin and English explanations of chemical symbols and names (fos 27-31); English instructions for the extraction of medicines from natural substances (fo. 32); and medical recipes in Latin and English (fos 36v-42v, written from the other end of the book). On fo. i, in another hand, is 'Societati Chirurgorum Londinensis Carolus Bernadus', above which is the date 1703. Nearly all the versos in the volume were originally blank, but some have been scribbled on in a childish hand. There are 46 folios in total.

Arthur Hollingworth and Rowland Freeman's backgrounds are not known. The Charles Bernard referred to in fo. i lived from 1650-1711. He was elected surgeon to St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1686, and developed the chief surgical practice in London thereafter. He was appointed Sergeant-Surgeon to Queen Anne in 1702, and was Master of the Barber Surgeons' Company in 1703.
