Scope and Contents

Papers compiled by Alan Reid of Matheson & Co. Ltd in relation to his visit to Australia to examine the proposal of H.C. Sleigh Ltd for its subsidiary, the Dominion Navigation Co. Ltd, and the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd to rationalise their operations between Australia and Japan and operate as a single service (the eventual Dominion Far East Line). The file includes the following documents:

1. Notes on discussions held in Singapore commencing 27 February 1965 between representatives of H.C. Sleigh Ltd and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, with many schedules containing statistics about the Dominion Navigation Co. Ltd and Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, including their vessels.

2. A memorandum from the Shipping Manager of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd to M.A.R. Herries on his visit to Singapore for discussions with representatives of H.C. Sleigh Ltd, dated 8 March 1965.

3. Copies of correspondence between the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, Hong Kong, and H.C. Sleigh Ltd, Melbourne, 9-13 March 1965.

4. Notes on discussions held by Alan Reid with M.A.R. Herries in Hong Kong, 12-19 March 1965, regarding the Sleigh proposal, 9 April 1965.

5. A memorandum by Reid on his discussion with D.F. Landale about his visit to Australia, 9 April 1965.

The file also includes a copy of a letter from M.N. Speyer, Swire & Yuill Pty Ltd, Sydney, to the Chairman, Australia & New Zealand/Eastern Shipping Conference, Sydney, 26 June 1962, regarding the decision of the China Navigation Co. Ltd and Crusader Shipping Co. Ltd to coordinate their services between Hong Kong and New Zealand. The ring-binder is labelled simply 'A. Reid, Esq.'.
