Papers re Chinese civil aviation scheme, 22 Oct. 1945-1 Dec. 1945
Scope and Contents
Papers regarding an aviation scheme of the British & Chinese Corporation. The Corporation proposed to form a new company to develop civil aviation in China, and appointed Air Chief Marshall Sir John E. Baldwin as its Special Representative to China and R.H. Mayo as its Technical Adviser in October 1945. The appointments were cancelled in December 1945 after the Corporation failed to obtain the support of the Chinese Government for its plan.
The papers include the following documents:
1. Correspondence between the British & Chinese Corporation Ltd, London; Sir John Baldwin; M.M. Boize, Secretary, Sir Edward Reid (British & Chinese Corporation Ltd), London; M.J. Cheetham, Foreign Office, London; Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, London; Matheson & Co. Ltd, Secretaries, British & Chinese Corporation, London; R.H. Mayo, London; and J.T. Pratt, Chairman, British & Chinese Corporation, London.
2. Instructions to Sir John Baldwin, 22 October 1945, 26 October 1945 and 5 November 1945.
3. A memorandum on the Corporation's scheme, 12 October 1945.
4. Two copies of a draft agreement between the Chinese Government and the British & Chinese Corporation Ltd for the formation of a new Chinese aviation company, 12 October 1945.
5. Notes by R.H. Mayo on possible concessions on the main contract, undated.
6. 'Note on possible alternative basis for proposed Chinese company' by R.H. Mayo, November 1946.
7. A telegram from the Foreign Office to the British Ambassador, Chungking, 15 November 1945, regarding the Chinese Government's rejection of the scheme.
The papers were kept by Matheson & Co. Ltd in its role as the Corporation's Secretaries, and some of the documents are stamped 'With the compliments of the Secretaries'.
