Scope and Contents
Correspondence and papers regarding the Far East trip undertaken by Alan Reid of Matheson & Co. Ltd in relation to the preparation of his 1962 report on the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd for the Board of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd. The file includes copies of correspondence (including some telegrams) between Alan Reid, Hong Kong, London and Tokyo, and various correspondents, including Birt & Co. (Pty) Ltd, Sydney, N.S.W., Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Matheson & Co. Ltd, London; correspondence between other correspondents, including between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Matheson & Co. Ltd, London; and enclosures, 22 March-16 June 1962. There are also a wide range of supporting documents, including the following items:
1. A photostat of an agreement appointing Matheson & Co. Ltd and Common Brothers Ltd as, respectively, Secretaries and Fleet Managers of the Vallum Shipping Co. Ltd, 7 December 1956.
2. A memorandum on the Australasia/Far East Service by W. O'Byrne, Hong Kong, 26 April 1962.
3. A booklet of the Directors' Report and Accounts of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd for the year ended 31 December 1961.
4. Two annotated copies of a 'Report on the Management organisation, Financial position and Operations of the Indo China Steam Navigation Company Limited prepared for the Chairman of Jardine Matheson and Company Limited, General Managers of the Company', 22 pages, undated.
5. Two copies (one annotated) of a 'Supplementary Report on Visit to Japan and Australia', 9 pages, undated.
6. Two tables detailing the shipping personnel home and local staff.
7. Three manuscript staff organisation charts for Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd's Shipping Department.
