Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous correspondence of J.H. Keswick of Cowhill Tower, Dumfries (mainly), Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Jardine Matheson, Shanghai, regarding the Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd. Much of the correspondence is comprised of originals and some copies of letters to Keswick, but there are also some copies of letters sent by Keswick. The correspondents include William Lorimer, North British Locomotive Co. Ltd, Glasgow; J.F. Owen, Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd, Shanghai; E.A. Rainer, Arnhold & Co. Ltd, London; J.W. Rippon, Platt Bros & Co. Ltd, Oldham; Leo Smith, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London; W.H. Way, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London; and F.C. Yapp, Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd.

There are also some related papers, including a draft agreement between Textile Machinery Makers Ltd, as agents of seven manufacturers, and Arnhold & Co. Ltd and the Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd for Arnhold & Co. Ltd and the Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd to be the agents of the manufacturers in parts of China, 1935, and a report by G.G.C. Harper on his visit to the Tientsin branch of the Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd, dated 29 July 1935.

The subjects covered in the file include aviation, China agency, Fenners, Hope Crittall Ltd, locomotives, paint, J. Stone & Co. Ltd, textile merger, Tientsin branch and Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co. Ltd.
