Scope and Contents

Copies of correspondence and related papers regarding schemes for the marketing of packet tea in India, comprised of correspondence (including telegrams) between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Bhankharia Brothers, Bombay, Jardine Henderson Ltd, Calcutta, Matheson & Co. Ltd, Calcutta, Matheson, Bosanquet & Co. Ltd/Matheson, Bosanquet & Co. Ltd, Coonoor, Polson Agencies Private Ltd (Managing Agents for Polson Ltd), Bombay, and others; correspondence between Matheson, Bosanquet & Co. Ltd, Coonoor, and Polson Ltd, Bombay; and related letters and papers, including copies and cuttings of press articles; a report by Matheson, Bosanquet & Co. Ltd on the meeting between its representatives and those of Matheson & Co. Ltd, Calcutta, and Bhankharia Brothers in Bombay, 23 and 24 August 1961, to consider a new company for the distribution of packet tea in India, 9 September 1961 (the scheme was not pursued); and reports on Aspinwall & Co. Ltd of Cochin and on the development at the Port of Cochin, enclosed with a letter from Matheson, Bosanquet & Co. Ltd to Matheson & Co. Ltd, 10 May 1963.

Much of the file is concerned with a joint venture for Polson Ltd to distribute and market tea in India provided by Matheson, Bosanquet & Co. Ltd and packed by them at Cochin and Calcutta to the specifications of Polson Ltd. This material includes a memorandum outlining the scheme, 18 April 1963, and reports on discussions between Matheson & Co. Ltd, Calcutta, Matheson, Bosanquet & Co. Ltd and Polson Ltd.
