Scope and Contents

Correspondence between W.J. Keswick, J.F. Owen and J.C. Taylor, Matheson & Co. Ltd, and Alan Reid, Argyll, Glasgow and London, with related letters and papers. Most of the letters were exchanged with Reid while he was working at the Ministry of War Transport. Much of file is concerned with shipping, and includes notes and memoranda on this subject sent by Reid to Matheson & Co. Ltd. These include notes 'on various aspects of shipping affairs as seen from Whitehall, and particularly their relationship to EWO problems', under the headings Ministry of War Transport, the Eastern War, shipbuilding, United Maritime Authority, post-war planning, and colonial rehabilitation and overseas trade, January 1945; a memorandum on the Australia/Orient shipping trade, London, 29 January 1945, with a sketch map of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd's post-war Australia/Japan service and Japan/China/India service, 29 January 1945; a memorandum on Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s shipping representation in Calcutta, 5 July 1945; a memorandum on the shipping organisation of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, 23 July 1945, with an appendix outlining the possible layout of the company's shipping interests in London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Calcutta and Singapore; and a pro-forma organisation chart for Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd's shipping interests in Hong Kong and Shanghai, dated London, 13 December 1945, including Reid as Shipping Manager. The ring-binder is labelled 'Alan Reid. 1945'.
