Scope and Contents
Correspondence of D.G.M. Bernard and J.H. Keswick, Matheson & Co. Ltd, regarding the Calcutta Conference governing trade between Japan and India and the complaints of British shipping companies against the actions of the Japanese conference members Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Osaka Shosen Kaisha. The main correspondent is the British India Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, particularly its Secretary, D.M. Hamilton. The other correspondents include H.M. Cleminson, Chamber of Shipping, London; Jardine, Skinner & Co., Calcutta; and Peter Tod, Rottingdean, Sussex.

Shaw, Chairman, P. & O. Steam Navigation Co., and J.H. Keswick, Director, Matheson & Co. Ltd, Attorneys of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, to the Assistant Secretary, Mercantile Marine Department, Board of Trade, 13 July 1936, regarding the position of British Empire shipping in the trade between India and Japan and the problems created by the rise of Japanese competition; and notes of a meeting held at the offices of the British India Steam Navigation Co. and P. & O. Steam Navigation Co., London, on 22 July 1936, regarding their efforts to enlist the aid of the British and Indian Governments against unfair competition from Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Osaka Shosen Kaisha.
The ring-binder is labelled 'British India S. N. Co., Ltd. and Calcutta Conference'.
