Correspondence re Kwangtung Coal Mines, 1919-1924
Scope and Contents
Correspondence and related papers regarding the development of the Kwangtung Coal Mines. The file is comprised of a small set of bound material (1) and three larger sets of loose papers (2-4), as follows:
1. Extracts from three letters from David Landale to D.G.M. Bernard, 18 October 1923 and 22 and 29 November 1923, and a letter from David Landale to D.R. Davies, Tonyrefail, Glamorgan, 9 January 1924.
2. A folder labelled 'Kwangtung Correspondence for Major Keswick Ede & Cassel Concession' containing letters and papers of 1920-1923, including a large set of copies and extracts of correspondence and telegrams between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, 12 June 1920-12 April 1923; correspondence between David Landale and E.T. McCarthy; three copies of an agreement between the Government of the Province of Kwongtung and Major Louis Cassel and Sum Pak Ming, Hong Kong, for the exploitation of coal reserves in the province, 23 April 1920; an extract from 'The Far Eastern Review', December 1920, regarding the British coal monopoly in Kwangtung Province; minutes of a meeting of the Kwangtung Coal Syndicate, 1 March 1921; and two copies of an extract from the 'Hongkong Daily Press', 25 August 1921, regarding a statement in the House of Commons on the Cassel concession in Kwangtung.
3. A bundle of copies of letters and telegrams between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and some related letters, regarding Kwangtung coal, 12 March 1919-8 January 1920.
4. A folder of documents regarding Kwongtung coal, with a contents list by D.G.M. Bernard, Hong Kong, 15 September 1922. The folder contains the balance sheet of the Anglo-Chinese Proprietary Syndicate Ltd at 30 June 1922 and the minutes of the company's Second Annual Meeting on 31 August 1922; the balance sheet of N.T. Concessions Ltd at 30 June 1922 and the minutes of the company's Second Annual Meeting on 31 August 1922; a letter from David R. Davies, Hong Kong, to D.G.M. Bernard, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, 21 February 1922, 2 pages, reporting on the prospect of finding coal in the New Territory; a copy of a letter from Davies to Bernard, 1 April 1922, 11 pages, containing his General Report, with Davies' plan of Kwangtung Province showing positions of known and assumed coalfields; a note entitled 'Kwongtung Coal' regarding the transfer of shares of N.T. Concessions Ltd to the Financial Group, dated Hong Kong, 11 September 1922, 1 page; and a table giving an approximate analysis of various coals.
The ring-binder is labelled 'Kwangtung Coal Mines', and is numbered 17.
