Scope and Contents

Correspondence of B.D.F. Beith, D.G.M. Bernard, J.J. Paterson and A.B. Stewart, Matheson & Co. Ltd, regarding the Maitland-Ormrod Trust, established by J.J. Bell-Irving for the benefit of his daughters Ethel Maitland, Countess of Lauderdale, and Eva Ormrod. There is also some material concerning the Ormrod Education Trust, established for Major and Mrs Ormrod's two eldest children. The principal correspondents are Major Maurice Ormrod, Kelso and Wrexham; Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong; and McJerrow & Stevenson, solicitors, Lockerbie. The other correspondents include John Burder, Jardine, Skinner & Co. Ltd, Calcutta, and Place, Siddons & Gough, stock and share brokers, Calcutta.

There are many related letters and papers, including correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and J.J. Bell-Irving, Deacons, solicitors, the Countess of Lauderdale, McJerrow & Stevenson, Mrs E.M. Ormrod and others; extracts of correspondence between Matheson & Co., London, and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong and Shanghai, 25 January 1929-16 November 1939; an index to copies of correspondence regarding the Ormrod Education Trust of 12 November 1932-12 September 1933; the legal opinion of Deacons, Hong Kong, on the Ormrod Education Trust, 25 October 1933; a list of securities held by Major and Mrs Ormrod's Marriage Trust, 31 August 1937; and the interest account of Mrs Eva Margaretta Ormrod in account current with Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, 30 April 1939. There are also several different copies of three tables prepared by McJerrow & Stevenson, 1 July 1936, of the securities of Major and Mrs Ormrod's Marriage Trust (recording investments contributed by J.J. Bell-Irving for Mrs Ormrod and investments by Oliver Ormrod for Major Ormrod), securities of the Ormrod Education Trust, and the Hong Kong securities of Mrs Ormrod.

Loose inside the file are copies of statements of account of Mrs Eva Margaretta Ormrod with Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, 1930-1938, comprised of accounts current, 30 April 1930 (2 copies) and 30 April 1931; capital accounts, 30 April 1932, 30 April 1933, 30 April 1934, 30 April 1935, 30 April 1936 (2), 30 April 1937 and 30 April 1938 (3); interest accounts, 30 April 1938 (3); and revenue accounts, 30 April 1932, 30 April 1933, 30 April 1934, 30 April 1935, 30 April 1936 (2), 30 April 1937 and 30 April 1938 (3), with covering letters from Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, to D.G.M. Bernard, London, 22 December 1936, 6 July 1938 and 10 November 1938, and a copy of a receipt sent by Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, to D.G.M. Bernard, London, for him to complete acknowledging the receipt of its statement of account for Mrs E.M. Ormrod of 30 April 1938.

The original ring-binder was damaged and has not been retained, apart from the front cover, which is labelled 'Maitland/Ormrod Trust'. There is a list of the Trustees of the Maitland-Ormrod Trust written on the front cover: D.G.M. Bernard; Captain F.W. Barker, Wrexham; and C.E. Hulton of Hulton, Bailey & Boulton, Bolton. On the inside of the front cover is an annotated list of securities held by the Marriage Trust, 31 August 1937.
